Stumbled across these little treasures in the realms of Instagram… Kris Golub makes these beautiful and elegant cloth dolls. They're the traditional 'rag doll' style, but they have a sophisticated and trendy aesthetic that left me spellbound. They're delicate and slender, yet they're stuffed and plush dolls.
Golub refers to them as 'art dolls', which I guess sums up exactly what they are - pieces of work in a doll form.
I'm looking at Golub's work not for their value or colour, the focus of this week's task, but for their form and the craft - an innovative way of making posable limbs and soft toys for adults (not ADULT toys no no no). Golub dresses these dolls in tiny garments and other artists and customers buy the dolls to dress them up themselves. I'd like to use a similar process to use as models on which to showcase my coloured clothes.
My favourite thing about dolls is how teeny they are and how absolutely adorable they are when posed next to real-world props (flowers and trees). Golub has explored this by complementing the colours of her doll's garnets and clothes with such props. This is a wonderful idea. I don't want to completely mimic Golub's work, but I would like to explore her principles in doll-making and fabrication.
